Introduction

The Department of Zoology, Islamia College was established in 1923 and is one of the important pillar in the Faculty of Biological and Chemical Sciences. The Department is providing teaching and research in various Zoological disciplines like Fisheries and Aquaculture, Toxicology, Stress Biology, Ecology, Physiology, Endocrinology, Taxonomy, Parasitology, Entomology, Biochemistry, Cancer Cell Biology, Genetics, and Neurosciences. Presently, the Department of Zoology having 14 Faculty members, among them five are Ph.D. holders and three have formal postdoc training. One of the faculty member has proceed to Germany for Ph.D. studies under the Faculty Development Program of Islamia College Peshawar and will be back soon.
Presently, the Department has a working fisheries laboratory as well as an animal house. The laboratories for other major disciplines are in the process to establish. The Department has a rich museum and a Zoological garden. The museum has a variety of about 300 preserved birds and animals’ specimens.
The Department has regular research ties with other indigenous and foreign Universities Zoology Departments like Zoology Department University of Peshawar; Department of Animal Sciences and Biochemistry Quaid-e-Azam University Islamabad; Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, Agriculture University Peshawar; Department of Zoology, Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi; School of Biological sciences, University of Punjab; Department of Biology, University of Saskatchewan Canada; Department of Neurosciences, University of Sao Paulo, Brazil and Division of Life Sciences, Korea University, Seoul, Korea.
The Department of Zoology is inviting the applications from Ph.D. candidates who have secured the financial support from Higher Education Commission and selected for indigenous scholarship.
The Department also enjoys active participation in the National and International level seminars and congresses in the field of Life Sciences particularly zoological society of Pakistan, fisheries society of Pakistan and genetics society of Pakistan. A well-furnished seminar- and a video conference room for this purpose is under consideration in the department. We are looking to invite key note speakers/scientists for the lectures.
The Departments is working on to add a gallery of the indigenous fauna within preexisting natural history museum of the Department for which the honorable Vice-Chancellor of Islamia College, Professor, Dr. Habib Ahmad TI, has already given the idea. The Department is also going to enrich the zoological garden by addition of local and foreign birds’ specimens.
